PROPOSALS TO INCREASE MAXIMUM NIGHT NOISE LEVELS AT RHA

“Robin Hood” (Finningley) Airport has now formally applied to DMBC to increase the noise limit which was imposed on night flights when planning permission for the airport was originally granted.

The current planning permission bans aircraft rated higher than QC2 from taking off between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am. The airport management claim that this puts Robin Hood Airport at a disadvantage compared with other local airports, particularly in attracting the new business necessary to guarantee continuing economic viability (however, there are some airports in the country with night time noise limits similar to those we have now). They are seeking to increase their night flying noise limit to allow aircraft rated QC4 to land and take off between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am. If this permission is granted by DMBC then Peel Holdings (the airport owners) claim that they will then be able to compete with other regional airports for freight (cargo) and other business that use larger and noisier aircraft.

Peel Holdings have said that the majority of night flights will be unchanged and that only a few of the noisier aircraft will be used at night.

There is also a limit on total noise over a period, they are allowed so many of the quieter QC2 aeroplanes but if they use the noisier QC4 type then not as many will be allowed. This regulation will not be changed under the current proposals.
